Do Every Job Well the First Time

Today I was cleaning out my basement.  It was incredibly dusty down there after our renovation and I was trying to go as fast as I could given all the dust and the cleaner fumes in the air.  Yes, I had a mask on and from time to time, eye protection, but it was still taking a long time.  I didn’t hurry through it though.  Why?  Because even though I hate vacuuming and cleaning up things, especially a basement I won’t use often, I figured I might as well do the best job possible.

I know it sounds strange – why put so much effort right now if I’m not going to use the basement – but hear me out on this topic.  If I slack off and do a half-assed job, what have I really achieved?  I have left a bunch of dust and dirt in my basement and I’m not going to be able to use the space for stuff I care about storing.  Now I have to go back down there and clean up a second time, after all the shelves and racks are in.  Stupid is what that would be.

While I was cleaning, I made the decision to do the job at hand as good as I could do it, even though I wanted to be writing to you and read the book that was waiting for me.  By doing the job well the first time, I don’t have to re-do it a second time.  That’s time saved down the line. 

Yes, it may suck in the short-term, but the time to do the job right the first time pays off all the time.  No exceptions. 

The next time you’re faced with an unpleasant job or task and you feel like half-assing it, dig deep and just power through it.  You’ll be glad you did.

Your Attitude Determines Your Altitude

I’ve had hundreds of career discussions with people in-person and online and regardless of the person, their skill set or the organization, there was one factor in common the successful ones always had: the right attitude.  Sure, they had determination/persistence and passion for their careers, but these two things are a given.

Once you have your career track figured out (passion), it’s time to do the work at hand (determination & persistence) and you’re on your way down the path to a great career.

But if you don’t have the right attitude, you’ll find it hard to stay on the track you’ve set for yourself.  Every little stress in life or on the job is going to have a more negative effect on you than necessary.  Every little obstacle you face will be easier to tackle if you have the right attitude.

If you have a bad attitude – regardless of why or what that attitude is based on (your upbringing, company culture, your boss, your peers, your experiences to date) you’re never going to get to the top.  Every little bump in the road encountered on that career track you set for yourself will be viewed in a negative light.  You’ll instantly replay those negative scripts in your mind.

In short, your attitude determines your altitude in your career…and your life in general.

Lastly, if your attitude sucks, your career will suck too.  It’s just plain inevitable.  Well, that’s at least what TJ thought and I think the careers of every successful person has proved him right.

How to Have a Positive Attitude
I’m not going to create a laundry list of ideas with explanations because of two reasons:

1) They’re self-explanatory
2) I want you to stop reading and take action on one of them….as in right NOW…

(Okay, so I couldn’t resist adding a little commentary for clarification purposes).

Eliminate Your Negative Thoughts - Listen to your inner dialogue and stop yourself when you start thinking negatively.  Replace those negative thoughts with positive ones.

Read Motivational Books - One of my favorites that always seems to work

Read Motivational Blogs - Similar to books, great bloggers who have a positive message to share will inspire you to control your destiny

Hang Around More Positive People

Turn Off the News (it’s always negative anyway)

Put Your Positive Goggles On - Start seeing the positive in every situation

Laugh More Often - Rent a comedy, watch a sitcom

Get Active – Any form of exercise is a natural stress reliever

Listen to Self-Help Audios - Anthony Robbins got me through a tough time in my life, so have Napoleon Hill, Zig Ziglar, Les Brown and even people like Gary V and Tim Ferris.  Plug in, listen and feed off their energy and ideas.

Be More Grateful, More Often – You’ve got it better than you think.  Just take a step back and think about it for a second and be grateful for what you have.  Millions of people in this world have it worse than you.

Recharge From Time to Time – Take a day off and do nothing.  Sometimes all we need is a little rest and relaxation to help us stay focused on the important things in life.

Those are some of my top ideas for developing a positive attitude.  What would you add?

Avoid Disappointing Your Boss with One Question

A one sentence question can be the difference between suffering through another status update and getting clarity on your project list.  If you’re overloaded with work and you never have time to get everything done and your boss always finds a way to find that one thing you didn’t get to (when you have of course taken care of 99% of the other stuff on your massive To Do list), you might be feeling a bit demoralized and disgruntled right about now.

What if you could ask one question to help alleviate the pressure you’re feeling, would you ask it…regularly?  Of course you would.  Here’s the question:

“From my list of projects, what’s your priority for me today/this week?”

You can of course answer it on your own and share that with your boss, but if you’re “wrong” too often, then it defeats the purpose and let’s face it, your priorities don’t always line up with the priorities of your boss.  So take this little extra step and ask the question.

Other great ways to phrase the question are:

“What are you most worried about from my project list?” 

“What are the key things keeping you up at night that I’m working on?”

Be a Leader: Answer the Questions on Your Own
Make sure you don’t get into the habit of having your boss prioritize your To Do list every week you meet with them.  You want to show leadership and ownership of your work.

In short, don’t become just a Doing Machine – someone who sits there and takes direction and does massive amounts of work – because they’re easily replaceable.  You want to be a leader – someone who is able to Think, Act and Lead on their own.

Side Note: If your boss responds that everything is a priority for the week or there’s too many priorities to get done in the week, find out what you can delegate.  If you’re the “last one on the totem pole” then push back.  If your boss still requires you to get the work done, do it for a short while.  The reality is that workloads flex from time to time.  If you constantly have too much to do, then you can see if your boss can lend a hand (stop laughing).  If this fails, start looking for a new boss and if that doesn’t work, start looking for a new job externally.

There’s always a solution to any problem you might have, even if the situation seems like it can’t ever get better.  It can, you just have to stop, take stock of the situation and figure out your plan of attack.  Most importantly, you have to take action against that plan.

Stop Reading and Studying Already

Do you love to read books and read articles online?  Do you just love to hear the latest strategy and tip for getting ahead in your job or your business?

Of course you do (you’re reading this blog, right?) but enough is enough.  There comes a point when you must DO SOMETHING and take MASSIVE ACTION toward realizing your goal.

This idea of putting your book down or turning away from the internet to focus on DOING versus LEARNING about doing is a point I wrote about yesterday – are you ready to commit to your destiny?

I guess it must be that important to write about twice in two days.

Your first step is to figure out what your action plan.  The next step is stupid simple – take ACTION!

Your “Knock Your Socks Off” Gold Standard

Tom Peters has a wonderful post from a few days ago that I just found.  It’s called – The EXCELLENCE 25: Master the Basics.  The post is a must-read, must-bookmark, must-share type of post.  Yes, it’s that good.

I took a look at #13 on the list and immediately a BIG thought popped in my head.  This is what he said:

#13 – WOW! (Knock-your-socks-off standard for positively everything.)

The phrase “Knock Your Socks Off” is a bit cliche and old, but it hits at the heart of DOING GREAT WORK and delivering a standard of work that lives on beyond your time on earth.  Weighty stuff, but it’s something to take a moment and think about.

So with this in mind, let me ask you, what kind of work do you do?

No, I’m not talking about what line of work you’re in – ie, what you do for a living.  I’m talking about what your work looks like when you’re done.  What standard of work are you consistently delivering?  Your goal should be to churn out and produce more GREAT WORK as much as possible.

As Hugh eloquently put it:

“More meaningful work. More often.” – Hugh Macleod

So that’s the standard – GREAT WORK coming from you more often.  Say NO to the mediocre bullshit others churn out on a daily basis.  Make Knock Your Socks Off work your GOLD STANDARD for the work you do and you’ll certainly deliver the goods on leaving a legacy worth writing about someday.

How do you make this happen?  How do you go from delivering good work to GREAT work on a consistent basis?  Easy, stop settling for so-so work.  Focus on giving it your best, whenever you can, especially on the projects and things that matter most.  Once you make GREAT work your default, it’s easy to consistently deliver it because it’s what you do and what you’re known for.

I know this might sound like a recipe for burning out, but it’s not when you know when you should deliver outstanding stuff and when “good enough” really is good enough.

You probably already know the difference, but just in case, have a short think about it.  If you’re worried that doing “good enough” work will reflect poorly on you, stop that thought right in its tracks.  Always remember, you can’t consistently deliver OUTSTANDING quality if you have a lot of STUFF to do (Quantity) during the week. 

Churn out the Quantity stuff quickly and then focus on delivering GOLD STANDARD OUTSTANDING QUALITY on the things that really matter.  Period.  End of Story.
