It’s Friday night and you’re waiting for the Lottery Numbers to come out to see if your life will be changed. The numbers don’t come, but there’s always next week. You’re waiting for that stock you picked to get bought out by Google or Apple, so you can make a tidy profit in an instant. You’re a little overweight and keep promising yourself that you’ll lose the 10 pounds (or 20), but you’re tired and tomorrow you’ll start.
You’re about to settle…and likely you’ve already settled into your comfortable lifestyle and routine. You’re about to tell yourself life is pretty good. Don’t or you’ll settle for a life so much less fulfilling than what could be.
“What if this is as good as it gets.”
That line was uttered by Melvin, the part played by Jack Nicholson in the movie As Good as It Gets. He was just leaving his psychiatrist’s office and wasn’t happy with the lack of progress he was making. He was facing defeat and wasn’t happy. If you’ve seen the movie, you know that Melvin didn’t give up and he kept trying to be better. He screwed up along the way, but by the end of the movie, he does end up in a much better place.
The thing is, he wasn’t sitting around waiting for something better to come along, he went after it. It was awkward and he was uncomfortable, but he embraced the challenges and emerged a new man.
If you’re waiting for better, know it never comes. You have to go after it…with determination, energy and passion. Only you can determine how good it’s going to get for you in life. Never forget that.
